Finally, it works. I list here a set of steps I did in order to make it work properly.

FIRST OF ALL: there's a maemocjk repository which contains old versions of maemocjk (for maemo3 and 4), so you need to DISABLE these packages (if you enabled them once).

IF you tried to install some packages separately, please, do the following:
- launch X Terminal
- run "sudo gainroot" command
- run "apt-get remove --purge libscim8c2a libanthy0" command

ENABLE Maemo Extras-devel repository (in the App. Manager).

INSTALL maemocjk-him-scim-anthy (from App. Manager or from X-Terminal).

DO the following:

- tap on edit box, e.g. web search box, notes, qwassr tweet box etc.
- need to CLOSE hardware keyboard when doing above
- then you can see him-scim gui
- then you can open hardware keyboard
- scim tool panel will be displayed at right-bottom automatically
- if not, you can show it shift + space
- shift + space is toggle switch so you can input alphabet also
- in JP mode (anhty), you can input JP using romaji input method
- you can change hiragana to kanji by hitting space bar
- when you finish to input text, click close button on him-scim gui
- so the text will be sent to the original edit box gui

I noticed a odd problem with scim-panel-gtk.
Once I start scim-panel-gtk, it keeps n900 from sleeping fully and keeps waking the n900 up. This can be confirmed by running powertop. n900 will spend approximately 30% of the time in C3 state and cannot go fully into C4 state.

As I do not need Chinese/Jap input all the time I tried killing the process scim-panel-gtk, but it just keeps restarting. The only way to fix it is to reboot.

Do you know why this is happening or is there a way to kill the scim-panel-gtk process without having to restart the phone?
